DSC00816.JPGDSC00817.JPG I could not go to the shohin convention and not buy a tree from Gary Ishii Chikugo -En nursery. They have great trees. The trunk is great. I pruned the tree and repotted it . Next year I will pot into a bonsai pot.

That is a nice tree, was it expensive at the show? And what does Kishu mean? I will stop before 20 questions....

That's a good one. Several of the Ishii kishus I've seen have developed a goofy bulge in the trunk, probably not their original intent.
@ed...kishu is a regional variety of shimpaku found in the southern areas of Japan...bright green foliage, and tighter growth. See here for a little more.

I paid 75 for this little gem.

That does seem reasonable for such a neat little tree. I have never been to a show, is it the case there are usually good buys at shows, or did you get lucky? I have seen the shows occasionally advertised and would have liked to go see them to look at the trees that are show worthy, but I never knew they were a place to buy trees.

almost all conventions (this was a convention really) have a vendors area of some variety ... especially in the ones in CA you can get some really great deals ... I can't say about the other parts of the country as i have not had the chance to attend yet...

@treekiller ... a really sweet tree... and a good buy

Thanks for the explanation of Kishu, now if someone comes up to me and says Kishu, I will know better than to respond with Gesundheit!

Ed,

The Potomac Bonsai Association Show and Sale is coming up May 4-6 at the National Arboretum in D.C. Don't know how far you are away in Ohio, but if you've never been to a show, this one is terrific. Vendors, demos and competitions, not to mention the National Arb's extensive and unparalelled bonsai collection to see. It's free (except for the vendor area, or course). I've gotten pretty good deals on stock at the show over the years.

I get there about once a year as my sister lives in Baltimore Maryland, which is about and 8 hour drive if the traffic is okay and I can drive like a madman.
