Hello everyone. I am new here and to bonsai'ing. Today I purchased Katsura Japanese maple tree from a nursery to bonsai. I picked this one because it was already starting to branch lower. My question is do I cut the tall branch now or do I wait to use it as a sacrificial to thicken the trunk? How would you guys go about trimming this guy? Now? Or wait? What cuts would you do first if any?

If you are that new to Bonsai, I would suggest first learning to keep your tree alive and then concern yourself with matters of design. Just my opinion.
Now if you have people around you who are savvy to the ways of bonsai ............... well, that is a game changer. Take advantage of that.

I would not bother to cut such a thin tree but how to proceed will depend what you want to achieve. There are literally hundreds of ways to work with such young plants.
