I have this grafted kashima and I would like to start working on it as a bonsai. I plan to make an air layer along the red line (first between the node above the graft) and cut at that level one of the two branches that come out at that point.
When should I cut that branch that I marked in the photo? The same day that I do the layering? A few days before?
I think it may be good for the layering to cut that branch, since auxins will probably accumulate in that area, which can cause the layering to turn out well.
What is your opinion?

I would not cut that branch or anything off until after the layer is successful. I also wouldn't try to layer this year so it can gain some girth. Good luck
