I know this is an old topic, but I can't tell if this is heat, critters, or other. I put this in all pumice last year, and it struggled a little after that, seemed to rally after. Now, it's the only juniper I have that's browning - very hot summer here, but the rest seen fine with it. I have sprayed with neem, pretending maybe this is mites, but I wanted to get other eyes on it.

more than just the brown tips...it looks like there is a discolored area...have you done the white paper test for mites? IMO neem oil is a waste of time and money...if you have mites you should look into a miticide...much more expensive but will work.

it could also be that this tree is just suffering some heat stress...

I have not, but you're right, should have tested that. Also, I believe this is one of yours, doing great here in my shady backyard

Edit: I did find a bunch of little white mites on the paper

Just a follow up, after a couple weeks of miticides and isolation, this tree seems much happier. I've been removing all brown to make room for new growth, and the overall color is better. thanks for the fresh eyes on this problem, all.
