I have lots of juni grafts going.

My question is when should I start opening the plastic wrap and when to totally remove. I cannot wait too long since the junis are out in full sun and once spring went in full swing, those w/ the plastic will be cooked.

Please note that I do not have shady area to move them to nor can I apply sun screen to protect them.

Thank you.

Go slow. Jonas covered his baggies with painters tape to shade them. That may buy you some more Baggie time.

TX heat will probably go through the tape but that gave me an idea...maybe apply some collar (hat like) like the ones used by vets to pets so they cannot lick their wound.

Thanks!!! :)

When you see new growth cut the bag when the growth has extended to the hole in the bag you can remove it. You can also watch for a slight swell behind the graft union.

On another note I put a pine I had grafted this spring and bagged the whole top into a big more sun the other day and fried about 1/4 of the tree! Be careful about it getting any direct sun except for morning sun.

For what it's worth, this is exactly the technique I use on my pines. I've used both masking tape and painters tape to shade the scion. With my teachers help, I've done about 25 grafts in the Texas heat over the last 3 years. My success rate has been approximately 40-50%. Ive only performed approach grafts with junipers using kishu cuttings that I've struck - my success rate with those is close to 100%

What about an alum foil 'tent' for the graft Dario?

Thanks Ben. I am aware of the risk but reminder is always good. I hope your pine recovers fast.

Great advise that I (in a way) ignored and paid dearly for it.

I procrastinated and did not apply the foil tent  thinking it is still cool anyway and they should be fine the next few weeks...WRONG!!! A few 80's and plastic enclosure = bad results. The 2 highest grafts on another juni got fried.

I re-arranged my plants as I took out my tropical trees so both are now shaded in the afternoon. I am not sure if the 2 that got fried are done for but I will just leave them be. The good news is that the rest are all as green as the day I grafted...some may be showing new growth as well (or is that just my wishful thinking?). :D

I also trimmed the new growth on most of the original foliage hoping to divert energy to the grafts. We will see.

Anyway...I hope some of the grafts make it. :)

It sure does. Nice simple trick. Thanks!

I used saran wrap on mine...easy and cheap as well. Love the fact that they stick to each other easily for sealing. I know I did mine clumsily but I think it is a good method if I can apply it neatly. :o

BTW, some indeed have grown, I partially opened some baggies last night and let the new growth poke out. Exciting! :)
