In 2019 I purchased this 'Koto hime'. I cut back to build taper and movement.

The tree is quite vigorous for a dwarf Japanese maple. I wired some movement into the new leader and branches. Doing so early is important. In 2022 I ground layered the base. I was surprised by how easily they grow new roots.

In 2023 I layered a sacrifice branch in the apex. The following spring I cut a V in the the base and secured it toward the back to create a clump.

In 2024 I made another layer a few inches lower on the same sacrifice branch and placed it on a lava rock. I was I little concerned about going from airlayer to ROR. I was planning on removing the sacrifice stub anyway. What do I have to lose. Just to note I did not trim this tree this year because I want the layer from 2023 to fuse into the base.
