Hello, thank you for reading my post.

I am new to the world of maple trees and propagation in general. I'm located in the PNW in 8a. This is a special project that I started on 07.29 because the mother tree has been ill and I was hoping to conserve the DNA from this tree because it has sentimental value. So I do know already this is out of season for doing this. My plan was to skip this winter outdoors with the plants and keep them fully outside starting Spring of 2024. The mother tree is not a bonsai , I am not quite sure what went wrong with it. Just started wilting and dropping its leaves very early this season. None of my other Acer Palmatum have done this.

Now in my extremely small sample size here I have some roots. I realize now though that I have gotten ahead of myself slightly and I don't know exactly what to do next. I haven't found a specific thread about transitioning these from an aeroponic system to a growing medium and also from "indoors" to "outdoors". If I am wrong please do point me in the right direction, I'll greatly appreciate it. How long do I wait until I put these in a pot and what medium is suggested? I've read of people using potting soil and sphagnum moss but, I want this forum's opinion. I have lots of akadama, lava rock, and pumice but I do not know if this is good for young plants with fragile root systems. My goal is to shock these plants the very least amount possible. One time ages ago I successfully propagated bamboo from seed and then all of them died after transplanting into individual pots. :(

This one will be called B4:

This one is called C2:

The browning on the leaves were there before these cuttings were taken and it hasn't spread or gotten worse since removing from the mother tree. There has not been any new growth or buds yet so I'm also eagerly awaiting that.

Also! As a bonus, I took a hardwood cutting of some 2nd year growth from an Acer Macrophyllum also on 07/29. (Admittedly without having any idea what goes into that process.) Fully defoliated and it has began growing leaves again with it's stored energy presumingly. It has yet to grow roots but it is so exciting seeing this. I really hope this one pulls through. I'd love to have a specimen of Macrophyllum because of how anti bonsai it is, and I'd really enjoy learning about decreasing leaf size. :)

Her name is A1.

Anyway thank you again for reading my ramblings and I do appreciate any advice , criticism, and support.

The guy you want to bring to this thread is @cmeg1

I have very limited experience with Japanese maples, and no experience whatsoever with artificial propagation like what you are doing. However I am quickly learning that Japanese maples tend to have weaker roots that are susceptible to root rot. They do not appear to like compacted soils... at all. Based on my extremely limited experience, I would consider sifted pine bark fines (pine park mulch with all the large chunks sifted out). I would stay away from sphagnum moss, personally.
