Here's a Japanese maple clump air layer I've been growing since fall of 2016. It came off of a tree in my yard and unfortunately I don't know the variety. It gets a nice orange fall color which is a little unique with palmatums.

I repotted it last Wednesday and took off the biggest trunk which had grown out of scope with the clump design.

When cut off of the tree in September 2016: I guess my original plan was to have a double trunk, but that has since gone out the window...

The last repot was in July of 2018:

Jump almost three years later, pics taken a couple weeks ago:

The biggest trunk has become too big and doesn't have any interest in my opinion, and I think the tree would look better without it. This would leave me with an even number of trunks but since they all are about the same thickness, I think that will be more believable.

So I cut it off before I repotted it last week. Carved out sanded with a dremel, sealed with wood glue. I think it looks much better this way:

Pulled from the pot, before cutting the rootball in half:

After some spraying and butchering the root system:

After a lot more spraying and cutting roots, then got it screwed to a board:

Potted in a cut down squat 10 gallon pot with mix of coco coir and peat moss and a lot of grade 3 perlite:

My plan is to let it grow more for at least a year if not longer, and then chop lower to start developing main branches. I want each trunk to have multiple ascending branches that will give a full and even look to the canopy, not defined central leaders with horizontal branches coming off of the trunks. Hopefully I can pull this off!

Haha bonsai gods know what they are doing! Yes- def need an update on this one. I’d say it’s time to chop those puppies down and let
em go crazy next year !

I'm definitely itching to prune this one back but not sure if should do that this spring or work the root system again. I may leave all the growth up top to help drive more root growth, but I still have some time to decide.

Ya that’s a good game plan right there. Looks like a fun project
