I'm pretty new to bonsai, but I keep reading of people grafting foliage from one variety of a plant to another. I was curious if this can also be done cross-species, such as between an umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla) and a dwarf umbrella (Schefflera arboricola).

My question is mostly hypothetical - I'm not quite ready to sacrifice my old umbrella tree, but it does have nice roots and is starting to get too big for the house.. so if I ever did need to cut it back.. I can't help but think it might make a nice bonsai with the small leaves on it.

Might want to experiment with trees you're less attached to, first, but it's at least theoretically possible. From what I've read, you're going to get stunted growth on the scion.
