I'm trying to figure out what trees in my area would be decent for a beginner? I've been out on walks and seen various new growth trees that seem like an excellent start for learning to keep native trees alive. Is there any sort of reference to look at that might indicate if it's a good type in the long run? I'd hate to just start pulling trees with no real future plan for them. I'm in central NY (Binghamton area) and have access to lots of private land to collect on. Any info would be killer. TIA

get those larch trees man! best species in the USA (maybe?) and probably in your backyard

Those s "Christmas trees" as my girls call them? They are a bit large, how would one even collect those?

I don't think you would collect those, I stick to 12" to 36" range when collecting. I'm a relative noob and those are enough work to accomodate

I saw my first bonsai tree at a shopping mall in Binghamton nearly fifty years ago and I was blown away. It was a display by a local guy. It took a few decades for me to get into it myself and that happened when I found some folks to connect with here in Michigan. I have no idea who might be doing bonsai in the southern tier these days but I think it would be worth while for you to find out.

We have or had a local bonsai club but it appears to be defunct now. 50 years was a bit before my time, the area had seen some DRASTIC change since then. It's an eclectic area but finding good people is always a struggle. Far too many run down areas to support a good hobby industry of any sort (unless you count illicit variety). There is a nursery who sells some bonsai that I planned on hitting up when they open on April. I'm sure they are over priced junipers but I go there once a month anyways to to take my girls to look at the plants and giant "terrarium" (just a planted tropical green house). But they might know of some other locals.
