I'm going to try and propagate some seeds. Bought them on a whim because I needed a 5$ minimum.

The Celtis seeds are for the celtis contest, the other two were the whim. Rhus typhina is staghorn sumac. And Sophora secundiflora are texas mountain laurel.

I dunno if they're any good for bonsai, but they looked cool in the pictures!

Texas mountain laurel can tolerate up to 10°F. So I think we should be okay outside. We'll see how it does. Apparently I'm going to need to scarify the seeds and plants in a 4 inch pot, no cold stratification necessary.

For the staghorn sumac, I need to scarify by boiling a pot of water and tossing the seeds in and leave them to cool. Then I pop them in the fridge for a month and then plant them.

Fingers crossed something grows!

And that they actually arrive today!

"Bought them on a whim"

(a) as a native English speaker, I know what this means... but I don't actually know what this means :)
(b) This phrase, considering I don't know what it means, more or less defines my life :)

I suppose it would be more accurate to say that I bought them on impulse

Don't take it in a wrong way. I love languages and unusual words - particularly words that I use and then suddenly realize I don't really know what they mean.

If the phrase of the day is "on a whim" the related word of the day is "capricious". :)

No offense taken, I'm the same way!
