Tucson AZ most collecting in SW NM at 6'700"
Been reading and learning here for a while. I live in Tucson AZ but have started and will continue to spend a lot of time in the Southern Gila Nat Forest in NM at about 6,500' el.

In AZ I have been working with Boxwood, hackberry, TX Ebony, pyracanthia and mesquite, nursery, collected and air layered.

I have posted lately in pines an oaks about collecting in the NM mountains. I have been preparing pines, oaks, and junipers there for collection next spring. Anything collected there will stay there at my cabin in a deer proof enclosure.

I am excited to share things I think Ya would like to see as time goes by. Only poor photos from the past but have been learning more so expect to have "real" photos hahaha to share in the future.

Thinks for all your information here, I think I have probably read most all the posts by now!

Welcome to B-Nut!

You have nice prospects...good luck with them. :)

Good to have you aboard. I spend not enough years in Tucson and outside of Phoenix. Was truly a great place in the 60's and 70's. Again welcome.

How will you care for/water trees at your cabin so far from Tuscon?

Hi & welcome!

I lived 2 years in Tucson before moving to Niles, Chicago suburb. Not the same weather and problems but the same coyotes though! :) (well, may be a little smaller)

I wasn't in the bonsai art while living there and regret it badly because I'm pretty sure the yamadori collection would have been amazing! Just be careful of snakes, scorpions and spiders! :)

Water fo my NM trees

I have a gravity fed, battery timed system with a much larger reservoir than came with it, as well as reliable pressure water I can use with a regular watering timer. We plan to split out time Tucson/NM about 3 weeks up and 2 weeks down, that is how we have been doing all spring summer. Admittedly an enviously lucky situation for anyone, especially for a collector. The biggest threat are the deer! They are around daily, now with anew crop of little spotted bonsai munchers hahaha

We have a large outside cat pen, it faces South and has worked so far as long as I don't collect anything the cats like the taste of.

Welcome!!!! :)

Bonsai and Arizona always feels like a contradiction in terms to me. lol I'll look forward to seeing your efforts. :)

Kindly,

Victrinia

Love New Mexico, I lived in Santa Fe for 2 years and Taos for 5 years. Almost time for those hatch green chiles roasting on the street corners. Fall was the best.

How do folks "legally" collect material on state or national park land? I am curious about this as I have seen many posts on several sites about great trees from such locations.

The Gila is a National FOREST. Multiple Use; not preservation. You can get collecting permits.

Permits

Don't be discouraged if when you approach the person at the FS desk they don't know what you are talking about hahahah Try asking about transplant permits. There will be someone back in the bowels of the office that will help Ya.
