Why do rose companies tend to avoid these, anyone have one? Any more difficult than other rose or out of favor , or?

Wrong subforum, but damasks are still pretty popular with specialty rose nurseries. The issue is low demand- damasks bloom once (the Quatre Saisons family of varieties repeat a little in the fall) and are invariably pink.

Thanks - is the fragrance that unique? Kind of why I wanted one. It was going to be my root over rock choice, but I think I will start with cheap nursery stock available here.

No- and besides, many damasks (I think) would sulk in your climate, in general the once-bloomers do much better with a dormant season, and damasks don't appreciate high-heat high-humidity.
If you want a fragrant rose to do root over rock, I would try to track down 'Sweet Chariot'. It is a miniature rose of the polyantha lineage, so it should have no problem ramifying (unlike many roses) and the color is cool, too.

Thanks, looks like you picked the best variety for me, but after finding it I see I will spend over $40 total and so I am going to cheap out and get a miniature from the nursery but I doubt I can figure out if it is a polyantha from a label.
I appreciate your steering me away from damask, I would have wasted money on that. Is 'drift' rose acceptable for branching ... or just stick with miniature?

Well I went to Ace hardware and found this knockout rose with a decent trunk, so this will be my entry.
Not a polyantha, but still a shrub rose. Pruning a rose is new to me, so I will have to read up to find out even if I can flush cut. all the way to trunk or leave stubs.
Will post update when rock is selected.

That was fast - i'm out.
I had a nice big pumice rock I put it on and foiled around the outside, when I lifted the foil to see why leaves so sad, it was evident water was going straight down and not to the sides (the one week it was cool enough that water didn't turn to humidity here). Should have used a towel.

Well this rose is a fighter. A week after I got it out of the pot, it shed its old leaves and started new buds.
Looking vigorous now.
