I just noticed this tree right outside my office. I am pretty sure it's an elm, but im not that good with identification yet. Do you agree or am I wrong? This picture was taken yesterday afternoon.

Thanks!

Sikadelic,

I think this is either a choke cherry or a black cherry.

I am sure it is not an elm.

Regards,
Martin

Yep

What he said. Black Cherry.
Spent most of the afternoon chopping down around a dozen of his brothers. Have one huge one that I keep for the leaf supply to add to compost in the fall. But every year it is the same deal with its unholy offspring. Birds love the cherries and being birds sitting on whatever they can and "doing birds business" -- VOILA! dozens to dig and chop EVERY year. Always thought they would make good bonsai but the chipmunks here love the bark in winter so I have never bothered to start one. If you have a place where you don't have that problem in about ten years they develop some really awesome black crusty bark with short racemes of white flowers followed by very shiny almost black pearls (about the size of green peas) hanging all over it.

Thanks for the input guys. Like I said, I'm not the best with wild identification yet. I may try to take a few cuttings and see what I get.

Here are some pics of the tree I dropped you a line about.
One of a raceme up close, one of its natural orientation,
and one from a neighbor's woods of a medium size. As I
said they can be quite striking when in bloom.

Why cuttings? Dig the whole tree up!
Digging it up now would be my only option. Isn't it too late in the year to dig it? I am moving this November so I won't be able to do it next year.

I have collected with not much choice in mid summer and have had good results. It is not ideal but in a bind think of it as repotted when a pot breaks, not ideal but one must do what they must.

I think you be safe to chop the trunk to 16-18 inches or there abouts and dig it up. Taking that much off the top I wouldn't worry about digging it. It's not the ideal time but its a young tree, its not all that late and you'll be chopping most of the top anyhow. I'd go for it.

Hell, it's worth a shot. I would go today but it's raining and next weekend I will be on my first family vacation to Gatlinburg, TN.

I'll give it a shot 2 weeks from now and see what happens.
