This is of course not for SURE!

BUT.... I think....sorta... that I may have FINALLY figured out what to do with this baked mud.

1. NEVER let it get into the bottom drainage layer of lava
2. Keep it .....THE HELL AWAY .... from anywhere NEAR a.... drain hole. (or any other place it could turn to drywall mud and stop up the works.)
3. Use the HARD kind. No mooshy akadama allowed.
4. Use the larger kind (if the pot's big enough)
5. Try to ...scatter.... it about so it won't gather into terrorist groups to piss you off by becoming sludge. Make it into random "drinking fountains" for wandering roots to find.
........On their own.
........When they get thirsty.
6. Intersperse it with PUMICE. (Pumice outranks akadama and keeps it in line.)
7. HOPE things work out better. ;):)

All indications ...this year.... seem to confirm those personal rules.

Ahhhhhh.......

I think.

How about your inorganics should not breakdown in use.
Or every 5 years you will be forced to bare root and further slow down
refinement ?

I generally use large pumice as my drainage layer. But lava should work fine. It’s heavier.

If it’s a normal size tree, the main soil is regular size Boon Mix. Which is, as you know, akadama, lava and pumice mixed together. Then, a top dressing of smaller Boon Mix on top. The smaller mix holds more water than the large mix. The soil surface tends to dry out faster than deeper in the pot, so using a more water rentitive soil on top offsets the drying tendency of the soil surface.

Just be aware, it is true that Boon’s Mixnv drains well and may require more frequent watering than a soil mix with organic matter included.

Whoa!

I had no idea what “Soylent Green” was referring to! So I just googled it. I was just making a pun of “work out”...

But now, I have to wonder about Mike Corazzi...
