Hey All. I purchased this Hinoki False Cypress from a big box store in early June. In late June it was worked on and moved to the new pot, a 10" pond basket. I tried to take off no more than 1/3 of the roots, trimmed some branches, and placed into a soil mix that's 1:1 pumice and turface (calcined clay). I know the traditional mix is 1:1:1 pumice/lava/akadama but I had turface and pumice, and figured 1:1 should be roughly similar.

I'm in USDA zone 7a. The plant has been on the top shelf of a small greenhouse shelf unit on my rear patio. It faces E/NE and receives direct sun until roughly 1-2pm when it receives indirect light. I started it off with liquid fertilizer (miracle gro) in mid July at full strength once a week. I recently moved over to granule organic (superfly bonsai). I have been watering daily, twice on the hottest days of the year. A few times recently I've watered every other day, when it's been cooler and cloudier.

I feel like the tree is doing well but I'm worried about all the leaves browning. I am seeing some small new shoots on some of the larger branches, which I think is a good sign. But many of the remaining branches have at least some level of browning, and one branch lost all its leaves. Is this to be expected in this situation? Am I over or under watering? The fertilizer?

I'm fairly new to this and this is my favorite tree so I'm hoping I don't lose it. Any thoughts are appreciated.
