Recent purchase. Uppotted into grow basket filling in with pumice, scoria, pine fines. In morning sun, afternoon shade in central AZ. Any idea why it is doing this?

When was repotting done? Please put your location in your profile.

Location needed for sure. Penumbra is on to something. Sometimes people see folks up pot and think it’s universally safe. Not always the case. Foliage to me looks like it’s desiccating whic tells me it’s a problem with the roots from repot.

Wasn't repotted per-se, just uppotted second week of July. I am in central AZ at 5K feet elevation.

Hinoki naturally grow in a humid coastal region of Japan. Mine sometimes struggles a bit on the hottest days of the summer in Missouri...your location might be too hot and too arid for this species to thrive without some kind of automatic misting setup.

Thanks, you might have a point.

I think it has less to do with humidity and more to do with a re-pot. Whether it was just a Slip pot or not, the foliage picture indicates stress on the tree typically in alignment with what I’ve seen from messing with the roots out of season. Hinoki can take a lot more abuse than I think they are credited for, but are def a timing dependent species. At least this is my experience in dealing with Hinoki in Albuquerque New Mexico.

Thank you all for your advice. There was minimal root disturbance, I'll decide to slough off the uppot material, put it back in the nursery pot or keep it there and prune it back as I intended. It's only been a few weeks. Want to keep it stable until I can wash out the roots and get it in my aggregate. Thanks for your help!

Gosh, likely the Hinoki will have a better chance if it’s gently returned to its pot.

Then likely would be a really good idea to leave the tree alone. Let the affected foliage die back completely and see if the tree survives. Hinoki’s can be pretty tough. Trim off all the dead foliage late fall early winter.

Hopefully the tree is under shade cloth?

Good Luck
