Help with Pest ID!

This morning, I discovered a black cocoon or fungus around a branch on my Crabapple bonsai. It wasn’t there yesterday so it appeared during the last 24 hours.

I peeled it off with a toothpick. No damage or marks to the branch. It had a gooey styrofoam consistency.

Any ideas?
