Found this little guy in my yard, so I scooped him up and put him in a pot. I *think* it's a spruce, Norway Spruce. Or perhaps a fir?

I'm in SE PA.

Probably won't survive but we'll see. Worth a shot. Didn't leave it in the ground because it was the middle of my lawn where I mow.

To me it doesn't look like a spruce or fir but some kind of Juniper, most likely a J. Communis Prostate or maybe a J. Procumbens (less likely).

You can try to identify it with a app like Plantnet.

Thanks, not sure why I didn't think of that!

According to Plantnet, it seems to be a juniper. The big tree is definitely Common Spruce. I assumed the sapling came from the big tree, no idea where a juniper would have come from as there aren't any on my property or neighboring properties.

🤷 I'll treat it like a juniper and see how it does.

there's a fair number of birds that eat juniper berries

Could be common juniper as well.
Birds or something else easily Could have deposited seeds

It is an Eastern Red Cedar. ERC is NOT a cedar despite its name. It's a juniper and an extremely common one in the eastern U.S. It's everywhere--and one of the most common trees in the Middle Atlantic states.

it typically makes really really crappy bonsai material.--growth and foliage is uneven, trunks lack character. Host to Cedar Apple Rust that also infects apple trees.

Thanks! It does look like ERC. I guess I'll just plant it as a tree at the edge of my yard if it survives.
