Attached are some pictures of what thinking is some type of needle juniper. I found these guys in the middle of my in-laws yard and some seem to be there for years after being ran over by the lawnmower week after week, year after year. Think these little guys are great.

Looking at your geo position I think there's not too many species to think about. Common Juniper?

That's what my J.Cracks (ERC, J.Virg.) look like lawn whacked.

Could be common too.

Eastern red cedar, can be used for bonsai if you can find a trunk with a little size. Those little trunks will never thicken in your lifetime.

problem with ERC is the foliage...bottom line is that it just sucks and never looks right... causing most folks to give up on the species after a period of time. I do like the small twisted trunks....now that they won't be getting mowed every week you may have to work to maintain the small size.

I agree, not so much the mature foliage but the immature. I have some 5-6 years now and they are still juvenile... Any other Juniper I have and or had goes to mature far quicker as well as develop berries.
ERC could still make a decent forest though with that natural upright growth.
