My son has been wanting a bonsai for years and I finally got him one. Can someone please identify what species this is? Thank you

It’s a juniper and belongs outside where it can get sun and air. It won’t last long inside mostly a few months before it begins to decline. If you want an “indoor” bonsai try ficus or schefflera. They can tolerate harsh indoor conditions

Thank you so much. The picture was from inside because we just got home with it. First thing in the morning I will make a special place for it outside.

It’s important to know your location like if you’re in an area that gets frost and freezes. If it’s winter where your are the tree may need some protection for its roots.

We don’t get many freezes here just a few nights here and there. I can bring it in the rare nights it gets cold.

You don't have to bring it in, it will be fine.
Juniperus procumbens is tough.

How old is your son? If he's on the younger side, he might lose interest for a while and come back to a dead plant because playing outside is more fun than thinking of watering. This happens, it's not a big deal. Juniperus procumbens are easily found in a lot of nurseries and they are not expensive when bought as a garden plant. In a single repotting, the new tree will be at the same point in development as yours is now.

It might be fun to grab a couple and see how far you can push them together, as an experiment to learn a bit about the species without touching the important first one.

Have fun!
