This is a red berry juniper (Juniperus pinchotii) that I collected and finally put some wire on. I’m thinking it’s only going to have foliage coming from the trunk that I’ve pulled down and to the left but I’m going to keep the other foliage to develop the live vein and maintain vigor in the mean time. Not necessarily going for a conventional design but I’m kind of stumped on how I can keep it inside the deadwood while still being aesthetic. Any mock ups are appreciated 😁IMG_1030.jpegIMG_1019.jpeg

keep it inside the deadwood
????? Please explain

The trunk is long and skinny so right away I think literati and very little foliage. Here's one option right off the top of my head

There's usually plenty of possibilities so let's see what others come up with.

I like your tree and also like your back drop. Is that something you made or did you but it that way?

How pliable is that main top trunk section?
Feels to me you should bring it straight then keep pushing to the right.
Try to end the Jin tips facing up or to the right.

Something like this but better.
Love these artists, and it looks like it is so easy. Wish I had that imagination and skill.

I could definitely see this as a very good design but I didn’t know how to form an apex using just this amount of foliage. I refined it and will upload a photo.

Lovely design! 😎 I wish I could add some movement into the trunk but it’s pretty still and I just added the deadwood so not sure I want to try it at this time.

That's just the feeling i get from the tree. It's going to look great the direction you're going with it.
I get what you mean by 'inside the deadwood'. It's almost like a deadwood basket or crescent pot effect.
Cool tree.

Love the direction you're taking it. I'm looking forward to watching your progress and learning how this species reacts. Do you have others?

The part of the tree to the right--do you plan to leave that on to allow the tree to strengthen?

I have a few others. This is the first one I’ve styled so we’ll see how it behaves but they seem pretty hardy.

For now I’m going to leave it to keep adding strength and beef up the live vein. Bit eventually that’ll al be pruned off if the styled area survives.

Style it like this and stick that beauty in a thin round bowl. Unglazed brown. 🫶🏻
