Took a trip to Home Depot for one thing and came back with a tree, of course - a Euonymus. Don't yet know anything about this species. I cut it back and let's see if it backbuds. Tree came with a warning sticker that it is considered invasive in NY.

It should backbud. Keep it in full sun during the summer and you will be rewarded with bright red foliage in the fall

I’m good at killing these.
What I believe to have learned:
Full sun is good, but don’t allow the rootball to dry out! They do produce very nice fine fibrous footballs quickly.

They are -in my understanding- a single flush plant. So don’t go defoliating after it leafs out 🤣.

Branches die back a bit after prunes. So give it enough length to keep the buds/growth behind the prune alive.

If I recall, There are some good threads here in the archives on these.
Good luck !

Is that Euonymus alatus, burning bush? Or one of the other many types of euonymus?

Not sure. I believe it said burning bush on the tag, but not Euonymus alatus.

The bark looks like the the one on euonymus europaeus. I have 6 of those at the moment. I find them very easy to care for. I experience multiple flushes on them and the tips of the new growth droops when they need water, but I don't wait for that to happen. They seem to like being in full sun except for the hottest of the summer days when temperatures rise over
about 35 C. It's my favourite species that I own. Nice find, good luck with it

Could you post pictures?

Could you post pictures?
Sure. However, they are very raw material. These are air layers I separated last autumn:04.03.2023.jpg04.03.2023_6615b5.jpg
And this is another one after a year and a half or 2 years in the pot, after collection, just to show the roots that they make. There were only 2-3 thicker roots than the ones you see there.23.02.2023.jpg

And here is the trunk of the original tree that I thought resembles the OP's. I don't know how old it is, but I'm certain it's over 12 years old because I counted 12 rings on one of the layers I took from itIMG_20230405_083330.jpg

The wife asked me to go to Walmart which happens to be next door to Home Depot and that got me thinking - why have 1 Euonymus when I can have 2 for twice the price? And so it was.

Also took a pic of the stickers on the side of the pot - its a Euonymus Compactus/Euonymus Alatus. The rest of the sticker is particularly amusing.

Then there was this JM. Little pricier than usual, but I think I can work with this (and I apparently have self control issues). I'm going to layer it right below the split. It's already branching like a twin trunk. 3" wide steam pipe trunk. Never took a layer this large, but I assume the massive amount of foliage will give me tons of roots.

Last time I went to Home Depot I strolled around for a minute…..and right down the Rabbit Hole I went. Lucky for me I stoped at the new orchids. I already have to sneak in any new trees 😉

Good Luck with your new purchases!

cheers

So this guy seems to be working with me and growing buds all over, especially where I want the new leader.

These guys do a good job with back budding. Once you get it in a shallow pot keep an eye on your watering. As stated above they grow a dense fine root system every year. I need to repot yearly.
