Hello,
I am new to this forum and relatively new to bonsai.
I was given some pre bonsai stock most of which are about a meter tall, with new leaf growth about 2/3 at the top. I would like these eventually to be pruned back to at most half this height but I am worried about loosing all of the leaves that are at the top. I would like to start this process on two Callistemons (Australian Native). There is also a pine (unaware of the species) that I would like to shorten. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Kind regards
Julian

Hey, welcome to B-nut! You may get more response by posting a picture of the pine in the pine section, these guys are very knowledgeable here and could probably help you. The australian tree may be a bit more abstract for an american bonsai site as far as experience with one goes. Be warned, they will want to know where you are from and your agricultural weather zone!!!! Good luck with your pre-bonsai,

ed

I think you should do it. (no guaranty it will live) I know of callistemon citrinus (I think it was... break a leaf and if its lemony then yes) anyway I have seen this shrub pruned back very hard in the landscape, but never used in bonsai. I imagine you will have a decent scar to deal with and probably the new lead will come out at an odd angle. you could adjust the angle of the main trunk to soften the new lead and wrap the scar with tape to less swelling.

As for the pine, there will be a million threads already here if you look!

Thanks for the information so far.
I will post pictures of all the stock, five in total.

I have been practicing bonsai off and on since I was about twelve so now 6 years. Only now am I attempting to do things 'properly' as opposed to purchasing bonsai and unfortunately neglecting them. Now that I have more patience I am bit worried about killing these trees.

Thanks
julz
