Hey all. I recently acquired a couple mame Japanese black pines. They are a little smaller than I thought. I’m wondering if it would be ok to up pot them little by little and grow them out over the years to get them to Shohin size. Beyond just growing them out any advice is great appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Personally I would not want to grow these out and simply continue to develop them at their current size

Great little trees!
I agree. I’m just so nervous about the small pots in the summer time. It gets quite hot in my backyard in the summer. I’ll have to leave them under shade cloth with my maples and on some wet gravel to be sure they don’t dry out. Cheers.

I wish I had some mame pines like these and the goal is to keep them as small as possible.
If you want shohin size use something else.

Place these pots on top of a much larger container of bonsai soil. The roots will grow out the drain holes into the bigger pot, and the trees will be unlikely to run out of water.

I keep my name trees nestled in an oversize tray filled with dust and the finest pieces of my substrates (akadama, pumice and lava rock).

I took a Mame class last year and along with the help y'all suggested the teacher said you can use a tray of sand. I just didn't get any roots to grow out of the draiange hole. Next time I'll push a root through the drainage hole when I pot it up.

Herd. It’s was more for horticulture reasons. I’ll do some research on caring for the them in the heat of summer. Thanks.
That was my challenge when I tried last year, keeping the watering and sunlight balanced. Unfortunately I wasn't able to keep it watered enough while I was at work. I'll use some type of drip watering system when I try again this spring.
