Hi,

As you all know i'm cheap, so i want to propagate my newly ordered sphagnum moss. I'm already trying to grow moss in (greenhousy/almost closed) plastic containers with lost of moisture and light. So/but, what is the best location for growing it outside (full sun/half sun/shade?) and or any tips about this subject (can they stand in a pool of water and how deep?).

Thanks,
Cyp.

Cyp,

please check the Health problems of Sphagnum Moss on Google.
Good Day
Anthony

Theres some sphagnum moss that grows at the edge of my yard in 100% shade of big sweetgum trees, so put yours in similar shade.

I doubt they like sitting in a pool of water btw.

OK. Info please. Some kind soul gave me an orchid. Not really a fan,but I googled a lot and will look after it,since it's here now. However, nore interesting to me:it has a sphagnum moss substrate, some of which i tweezered out around the crown(crown rot, doncha know).I t's probably rotten, but there were these tiny seed like things in it.I'd like to try to propagate from that. Can I?

I thought orchids are most of the time planted in moss because they like the wetness. Good luck with ur moss seeds.

Moss doesn't grow from seeds. It grows via spores. You cannot plant "moss seeds." Moss is usually propagated using CHOPPED UP MOSS that incorporates the tiny (near microscopic) spores. The mix is spread on the surface where you want it to grow and kept damp, not soggy.

Any why you would want to grow sphagnum moss is beyond me. It will take a pretty long time to grow enough to be of any use. A package of dried s. moss from a nursery costs a few bucks, but it lasts a while. If you're not using it in your soil mix and as a top dressing for newly-repotted trees, it can be re-used over and over.

Sometimes being cheap is just being silly.

I also need other/more/a bunch types of other mosses and i want to be able to grow it, and also i want to make some moss grafiti in the near future (and or maybe reverse graffiti (make art by cleaning a dirty wall))

I did not say seeds. I said "tiny seed like things" . I live in an area where you can't just go out and buy what you want.

Please stop getting upset when someone answers your questions just because you don't like the answers. FWIW, the stuff you have pictured is, I'd guess, NOT grown in place on those walls. The letters definitely aren't.

It's too bad you cant. Right now where I'm sitting I could fill a pickup truck in about 10 minutes. Sphagnum grows in swamps. It is very coarse and tendrilly. I have some I grabbed in case I want it for airlayers. And maybe I'm putting it in with collected Tamaracks to promote healthy root growth and moisture retention.
You can get it at places like Walmart and Home Depot.
