I recently bought a Illinois everbearing mulberry for the yard and it has a weak graft. I'm thinking about trying to ground layer or would it be better/easier just to plant it deeper and hope for the best? I've had really bad luck with fruit tree grafts, I just don't want this to fail on me. Its grafted on russian mulberry

Will ground layering get rid of the graft? In other words remove the rootstock? I guess a photo or two of the graft would help a lot.

Getting rid of the graft would be the only reason for the ground layer. Can't really get a pic, I have the mess buried in a nurse pot.

I ground layered a native red mulberry with a wire tourniquet. I didn't strip any bark off first and got sprase roots above the wire. It "worked" but if I were you I'd strip a ring of bark off and pack it with moss for better results.

P.S. these things root from cuttings nothing else you've ever seen. Just shove and pruned off brnaches in the dirt at almost any time of years and you'll get clones

Thanks. Maybe I'll just leave the graft then and plant it deep enough it's protected some. I like the idea of making clones.

What @GGB stated with the tourniquet will take a bit but give you good results along with a nice root spread over time. I just noticed though you have it in the ground so the easiest is to just bury it as you stated :)
