Hi, following on from watching Ryan Neil’s grafting YouTube video I decided to give it a go 12th April 2018:

Then a few days ago I noticed some needles on the lowest graft poking through the grafting tape and also the graft joint had swelled and split the tape as well. Is this a good sign?
I tapped up the graft union again to hold it in place and open the top of the graft up. The needles on both are nice and green. Anything else I should do? How long till I can unwrap the needles completely?

never grafted a thing in my life, should watch those videos though. Good job

I want to graft too! Care to share some experiences?
Did you do it as instructed in the video? Were there any practical issues that you weren't aware of after watching?

I have watched it about 3 times, I'm in the process of waiting for good candles to use. But it would be nice to know about your experience before I get to it.

To answer your question: Didn't they say in the video to unwind one winding a week? So there's time for the graft to acclimatize and get up to speed.

I've done a approach and thread grafts but these are my first scion grafts.

hmmm I don't think he missed much, I pretty much did what he said in his video... what I would say is that I observed the following:
- I had trouble finding the right para film tape. the you need at least the 1 inch wide tape, any thinner and it would be difficult.
- I used a bud from last years summer growth. Mid strength, not to strong or weak.
- I heard that it better to do it as quickly as possible so before I started cutting anything I had everything ready to go
- First, I cut the flat in the trunk quite deep (not quite half way) Which gave me a long cambium (green bit) to aim at with the scion.
- The I cut the wedge out of the scion, (one side of the wedge longer than the other - Ryan explains this in his video) the longer side of this scion wedge I lined up with the trunks cambium. The flap is difficult to keep open when you are trying to line the cambium up. I don't know if people use something to keep this flat open while you are lining the cambium layers up???
- I remember he said 'you only have one shot' so once I inserted it, that's where it stayed.
- when wrapping it, i should have cut a longer piece of tape and warped a few more times around the graft union, I noticed the tape split here exposing one side of the flat to the elements... it looks like the graft union swells which has split the tape. Looks like I got away with it. I've re-wrapped it now.
- I was waiting for the wrapped needles to bulge and for a candle to pop out of the end to know that it had taken... I didn't notice much of a bulge if at all. I only noticed the needles growing through the tape.

That's about all that comes to mind really. Hope that helps

oh and when hes says pull, stretch then wrap the tape he doesn't explain how easy it is to break that tape so be careful. The tape becomes thinner and more flexible once streached so is necessary. You can kind of feel when you are reaching its breaking point.
