Grafted San Jose

This tree was grafted by Roy Nagatoshi two weeks ago. It will be a while before I work on it. I may start jin and shari work this summer. Not the best picture. Sorry

someone please correct me if im wrong but that scion doesn't look like itoigawa. Looks like regular shimpaku to me...

I think Steve meant to say Kishu shimpaku as thats what Roy uses and thats what roys father used before him. I still dont know what regular shimpaku is. I guess we only see Kishu and Itoigawa here in so. cal.

In oregon you rarely see itoigawa and you almost never see kishu

I'm going to conclude that if we have any "regular" shimapku here it is lumped together with kishu

Usually kishu comes at a premium price because they're hard to find. The only ones i have seen before were small trees previously grafted by Roy. Doubt i will ever see a native kishu as most are shimpaku grafted with kishu or itoigawa.
