Yeah it's washing out a lot of surface soil but there's no GOOD way to cope with the fucking HEAT !!!
I'll pour some soil on top ...someday.

I sincerely feel your pain. Last summer was terrible for us... many street trees especially pines are dead. This summer so far we haven't hit triple digit temperature wise but the heat index has got up to 111. This kind of heat can get us as we have to worry about our trees. I hope cooler temp will come soon.

A piece of cloth that evaporates water, can be 10 degrees C cooler than the air. It doesn't stack unfortunately, in the sense that 2 cloths don't drop the temps by 2x 10.
One over the trees, one under, and you might have some leeway.

Also, this is one of those cases where ice can be applied straight to the soil. If you can find any.
