I am not quite sure why I have always liked the movie, Good Will Hunting?
It is just one of those quirky films that always seems to come on TV at least once a month, that I always seem to find myself watching... Now, I would say that perhaps it is just because there is nothing else on... but, I don't really think that this is actually the case, and in fact... I think that there is much more to the film, and much more regarding it's story plot, than just a something to do kinda thing.
That the film in so many ways... is really just a "Snapshot ", if you like... of life itself.
And that even though the story itself takes place in the South side of Boston... really, it does not matter. That for the most part, it is a spot on reflection of every culture and society as a whole.
So... you have the downtrodden, the Working class... who are just trying to survive. They have been abused... been mistreated by the upper class of society and for good reasons, often hold some resentment towards them. This part of the film I get... and I would say that this resentment in a lot of ways makes perfect sense. Because for the most part the common perception would be... that they are the one's responsible for the pain and suffering that the working class people recieve.
However, what the film actually shows, is really the actual reality... not the common perception.
That it is in fact, the Working class... that day after day seem to do more harm to each other, themselves... than the upper class could ever do to them.
The main character has been abandoned. He is an orphan, he has been abused in his childhood... and the abuse has continued up until the time of the story plot... as well continues through the story plot. That he is not alone... that in fact every one of the people we encounter within this working class society... have their own stories of abuse in one shape or another.
Sadly, as a result of being abused... they seem more than content on passing along the abuse further... as a means of trying to somehow deal with the issue of being abused. The logic being... I guess... That if they could be the one causing the abuse... that they would no longer be the "Victim" of such abuse? They would be strong... be powerful? When I fact, the reality is that they are still the "Victim"... seeing every action they take in life, is still a direct result of them being abused.
So, we see them literally, often times fighting amongst themselves... throwing blows over issues that have no real purpose... we see the constant ragging, or even what seems like innocent, "Just Keeping it Real" smart ass comments, which are often just blown off as just part of the way it is mentality, of living in a harsh environment, with the idea of it being a dog eat dog reality... and that you have to be strong in order to survive. Another common perception. And for the most part... we see somewhat of a vested intrest, in keeping each other in check... in line... and a resentment often of those with a willingness to try to lift themselves up. To leave, this all behind...
But, when one actually takes a closer look... what you see is... that none of them are actually surviving. In fact... they are pretty much drowning. That everyday could be their last. That they are all caught up in a Rat Race... that they did not actually start, but seem more than willing to participate in, and more than willing to further the status quo. That the upper class... has very little to do with the overall picture of what they find themselves in.
Even the main character finds himself at times almost reluctant to accept that perhaps there is a better way. That there is a future in life that isn't the status quo.
The only real fault I personally see with the film... is the notion of the main character's friend... Him feeling he does not have a future as well.
Perhaps they should do a sequel?
In which he finds a path forward... what ever that path may be? That everyone has something to offer to the World... In reality he is still playing the Victim... and just believing that the status quo is all he has in life.
Can't wait to see the film in another couple of weeks again... when it comes back on the TV. Don't know how many times I have seen this stupid film! Or how many times I will continually watch it? Lol!
