Now that we're getting to the end of summer and stores are starting to clear out their plants, are there better or worse species to keep an eye out for during these sales? (By better, I'm thinking trees that benefit from fall pruning or that overwinter in pots more easily.)

A lot of deciduous trees get pruned right after leaf drop. They still heal for about 2weeks after. I cut some elms last season and they did well.

I'm in the style junipers in summer camp now. But you could always have a go at those.

I'm guessing big box store's cuz you were just reading that thread?

I hope they get some better junis for fall planting, @sawgrass is making me nuts to crank a juni!

many of the big box stores will soon start clearing their tree sections to make room for christmas trees. i've picked up basic, hardy species like japanese black pines, oaks (coast live oaks and valley oaks), olives, crape myrtles, even ginkgos. granted, these are suitable west coast species and the availability in your area will vary (yews! firs! drool, drool, drool, hehe), and it's a great way to pick up material for typically half off. IMHO just be discerning for potential style and movement in the tree (i.e. don't just buy the material cuz it's on sale).

myself, i'm typically not too quick to prune the trees that i pick up from the sales. the 5-gallon material is usually large enough that it's worth air-layering the following spring. :D

This time of year they are just starting to offer discounts on a lot of Junipers here. Also shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Quince, and Crape Myrtle will be discounted soon. If I do pick any up this late in the season all of them Winter well right in the containers they come in and they are left alone until Spring. I figure if a plant Winters well for me it is then worth putting effort into. If I were to work a new plant and it failed to Winter it would be impossible for me to determine why...

The large nursery near me is having a 50% off sale on the 19th this month. Debating an amur maple. They have som 10-12 footers, straight as a whip though. Thinking a chop 4-6" tall, trunks are in the 3" range... IDK, will see when/if I go. SWMBO said I must have close to $800-$1000 into trees and supplies this year.

One thing to be careful about when buying from big box stores is seeing a nice big tree in a 10-15+ size container. At transplant time I've found that they put a B&B tree with a very undersized ball in the pot and filled it up with bark mulch. Not noticeable until you remove the tree. The small ball size in relation to the top can knock the survival rate down quite a bit. I've never seen this practice at independent nurseries.

I got a burlap'd green gem boxwood. Trunk is about 2'' thick i'd guess. It was discounted for a reasonable price and now I just have to wait until spring to style it and figure out how I want it to look!

So, in summary, any species that has a fat trunk, can be used for bonsai, and is discounted to a price that you are OK with is a good buy during the Fall ;)

I've seen a lot of jap. maples, crape myrtles, and boxwoods discounted lately

I paid $2 for this the other day in a two gallon pot!
It's a Foemina Pokes-a-lot :)

Which must mean you have about 3-5k in bills for shoes, clothes, kitchen appliances, and out to eats!

Lol SWMBO. I Thought my boss was the only one to use that!

LOL!! That at least! Wife, three daughters... Oldest in college, tuition, car (out of town schooling), rent (didnt like the dorms). The missus is in upper managenemt at a bank. I get a call sometimes after going through a small town and getting a snack, "what did you buy there?" usually within 5 minutes after leaving said establishment. Mostly in jest mind you, but still... Hell feels like I need an allowance! Haha!

If you live in an area that gets frost and freezes, hard pruning in the fall is surefire way to weaken or even kill your tree. Hard pruning can force the tree to push new growth just as cold weather sets in.

The 2 weeks after leaf drop.
I didn't have any problems last year.
1st time.
I'm still on the fence with the practice.
