I have a small ornamental plant, japanese dwarf gardenia . It has had crystals coming from new growth since I bought it. I didn't pay much attention to this but is it indicative of critters?

I think crystals by themselves are not, but there is something dusty on the plant that I would attribute to wooly aphids. So some investigation might be a good idea.
If you see any cottony looking bugs, treat against those.

Could be house dust or something, so don't stress too hard.

Dust, i didn't shower this plant much. 😅

However I wonder if these crystals are a known thing. I tried googling but mostly magical power crystals came up as suggestions. 🤷‍♂️

Could be thrips or their larvae, if you can get a photo and zoom in they are oval or rice shaped. Their damage is tiny too, so you might not notice on other plants.
