Any help greatly appreciated to find out what this is on my friends tree?

So far i think it is mould/ fungus

Always impressed with the knowledge on here so thought i would share for advice and possible diagnosis

It scraped off easily and was very soft and has been treated only with white vinegar

Any suggestions for treatment and prevention appreciated (i do have mancozeb or amoxystrobin but not sure if its necessary or possibly too risky so close to soil)

Soil was top dressed with akadama which has since been removed

From the photos, doesn’t look out of the ordinary… maybe mycorrhizae. Anyways forest application of vinegar will pretty much know out most normal nasties.

To be 100% sure spray with 3% H2O2 right out of the bottle. Shield the media.

Scraping the bark can lead to further issues. Best to leave that tactic when it is 100% certain bark removal will help.

btw what media is the tree in presently!

Thank you @Deep Sea Diver

I asked about soil mix but he does not know, all i know is it does get pretty wet and is mossing up if that helps what youre thinking? The real gunky looking stuff on the pics above are leftover akadama top dressing

Its from a reputable bonsai nursery so i would hope its in proper soil but i have no trees from them myself to even guess.

Have tried to attach vid of when he got the tree but not sure if it will work, the moss was removed at a workshop

Ok, after watching the video, I'm pretty sure what we're seeing on the lower trunk and surface roots is what's left of the moss. You can gently remove it with tweezers or wait for it to fall away, which may take a while. Going forward, keeping the soil too wet will cause problems with both the roots and the bark on the roots and lower trunk.

Concur. Seems ok, Yet just just in case there is something we are not seeing apply vinegar direct with a q tip. If it is actually moss remnants thes will turn black almost instantly.

Seems the most productive thing that can be done is not to put top dressing on the media. Proper mossing ok, no top dressing. Likely it is the cause of the media staying wet as the foliage appears in good shape. Might consider a repot in spring to see what’s under the hood.

Thank you both @Dav4 and @Deep Sea Diver I trust both of your knowledge and sure hope you are right here! Spring repot is on the cards.

Its the colour has us so confused, never seen anything like this before its a very close colour match to the akadama though so I wonder if there's something to that?

agree about top dressing, he is new to pines so didn't know and we are currently working on ways to protect from the wet British autumn and winter and spring (and quite a bit of summer tbf haha)

Good point. Pines are pretty tough, but some cultivars, for example cork and rough bark etc can be sensitive.

So new home, horticultural care, root and branch pruning all are things to approach with forethought.

Cheers
