These guys pop up in my yard, my landscaping, and the pots of my other plants. I have been planning to make a forest out of them. This contest will hopefully motivate me and make me learn a few things along the way.

I did not. Is it the one on the left with the shinier leaves?

If by chance you ever rubbed the leaves together they have a funny but kinda Pleasant smell,, well to me they do..I had a pretty hard time figuring out what tree I Collected growing between the planter box and driveway last year.. it looked like a maple but something was off about it and the smell when I picked was pretty noticeable.. the glossy feel is pretty different too.. since it was wedged between planter box and the concrete the trunk base was flattened really wide and put a really sweet bend right before the root base. I tried to kill it Multiple times over a 3 or 4 year span but I couldn't quite get to the roots to pull it up.. good thing I wasn't Successful because it turned out to be a really sweet bonsai. I've wired it and it's in his first year of training. 16741162252407185641849980275569.jpg

Btw those sweetgum will probably take over all the space in the pot because that are known as having a troublesome root system.. they will destroy sidewalks or driveways or getting into plumbing so be mindful of that.. it may choke out that red maple you got growing in their but I think a mix forest is super cool and I would vote for your forest if you put it together right any day.

I have discovered dozens of sweetgum on my property of all sizes. I thought they were a maple this whole time. I also have a lot of red maples and a few Japanese maples of some type. I'm looking forward to working with the sweetgum.

Red maples also have an aggressive, invasive root system, so it’s possible they’re an even match.
