I recieved a PM from Thumbless asking me what I use for drilling holes in tiles and the terra cotta water dishes I use to grow my tridents thru. The larger hole saw type apparatus is for drilling holes in tile and is a hardened nickle carbide impregnated hole saw. I bought it at Home Depot many years ago for about 30.00 and it has drilled many holes. I bought it for making the desktop gold pan/ slate waterfalls. I sold them for a while and made some pretty good money at the swapmeet with them. It has never dulled and I have drilled thru many glazed tiles with it.
The smaller torpedo shaped bit is 5/16 in diameter and about two inches long with a radius tip. It is impregnated with diamonds and will virtually cut anything. I have drilled holes thru glass with it and have found no tile it will not drill thru. Again I bought it at Home depot for about 35.00 about 4 years ago. I have no idea if they still sell it.
I have drilled thru stoneware bonsai pots with the diamond bit, but have not tried the nickle carbide. I do not know if it is hard enough.
