I bought this one as a bonsai but it was very weak with loads of root rot, compacted old gritty soil and a woodlouse hotel in the pot. So I overpotted it to let it recover for two years.

This spring I decided to start dealing with the rootball. I had to cut back fairly hard to get the imbedded old drainage mesh out.

With an eye to the future I cut back any straight branches even though it was a shame to lose that much ramification! :/ I think it would looks great at an angle on a rock...but for the moment it’s in a pot made by a friend who’s sadly no longer with us.

Nice.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
Sorry for you, and US!

That's a nice pot.

I like both the tree and pot. Tree has character and the pot has nice clean lines. Good pairing.

Like the new angle a lot. I think it could point down a tiny bit more once the base is trained.

I like the proposed planting angle, where the main trunk is almost level. Why did you not go to that angle when you repotted? It would be a good future.

Although, the 2 main roots being exposed give the tree a "profligate" stance. Not sure your minister could bear the sight without blushing.

Yup the roots are a bit of a disaster! Partly why I considered a rock, it would be planted in a pocket rather than a root-over and odd roots don’t matter, and pretty much a cascade angle. Some of the branches are still too straight to stay but they are ok for now....
