Hello! Yesterday I cut around the trunk/bulbous roots of this ficus tree and potted it again in a slightly larger pot with the cut parts under the soil. I found this plastic easy cover meant for food and cut a hole in the middle and threaded it over the tree and tied the cover around the trunk and it's snug against the pot. I don't really understand why the covering is used when ground/air layering? Does it help the roots to grow? Also would the plastic around the trunk also promote aerial roots?
Thanks 🙏 IMG_7516.jpeg

That's a cool Zuko profile picture, but the scar is on the wrong side.

Yes, the plastic is supposed to help with aerial root formation by boosting humidity.

I know that reference 😆

Okey, I hope to grow many many aerial roots so I'm gonna do what I can to boost humidity. My plans for this tree isn't to have it be a real bonsai style necessarily, I just want a thick trunk with many aerial roots, like a small version of how the giant ficus trees grow irl in the tropic countries of it's origin.

I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen others use damp (not wet) sphagnum moss wrapped around the trunk wherever they want roots to grow.

I will look into it, I did use some small dried sphagnum moss discs around the cuts, then soil around. But the trunk is still bare, I was afraid that there would be too much moisture.
