Here's a piece of rootstock I'm playing with. It used to be the base of an 'Orange Dream'. Made the chop late winter or early Spring. Made the approach grafts when leaves and branches matured a bit. All branches are from this year. There's one branch that is going to stick at two points.

With roots the way they are, I think I could work a rock in there. However, I'm going for exposed root clump. Hoping I'll get it there. Some branches have begun to fuse to roots.

Wow...great approach...all the way down there in Dallas!!
I have this variety in a growbox and as its a graft, I'm growing it out for some airlayer material....

Love these in spring!!!

Thanks, M5! I hope to develop this young material into something good next year. I think it could something fun for any viewer to evaluate along the way.

As I continue, I find it very difficult to make a good exposed root bonsai. I've mentioned somewhere that I might just airlayer and make it a more conventional base. Anyways, I gave it major pruning and removed a branch that I had originally grafted. It makes the trunk look better.

This week buds busting open, wondering if I should pluck the center buds between the leaves or just let them be and wire.

Thank you all. I really enjoy the plain green Japanese maple. They grow like weeds. Really great for beginners. Most of the branches have been either thread or approach grafted. I got one root that was thread grafted. I'll see how this all plays out.

I dont know if anyone wonders why I don't buy better material. Maybe none is wondering 😅. Well, I've always hated to screw up nice material. Better I do that to my own work than something someone else had helped to become a good piece of stock.

This particular tree looks ugly to me. I've wanted to sell it or even give it away. Instead I'm a little more determined to use it for learning and practicing.

I learn from threads here, from friends, from blogs, from Instagram posts, from FB, from books, and from trial and error. This tree will help me be ready for my other trees that I hope to refine and keep for life. I'm working on cleaning scars, design, and refinement. Obviously not practicing wiring 🤣. Baby steps!

I've removed some grafts I added some time ago, because I thought I didnt do a good job and it didn't look right. I may do that again with the root I added.

That's a gnarly tree you got going there. You know I love it!

It hurts my brain, but also I can’t stop staring! I feel like Voldemort is looking out the backside of this tree. Please don’t take offense i really like it. I especially like that you learn by experimenting with it.
