I was just wondering if anyone has a excel care sheet I could use to record what I do to a tree ect

Speaking of apps anyone with Mirai live have an update on their app development? I don’t see anything in the App Store.

I use Notion for mine, and give each tree a page. One of the cool things about Notion is that it let's you build databases out of just about anything, so it wouldn't be too hard to eventually convert my pages of notes and images to a spreadsheet at some point, I just haven't had the need for that with only 6-7 trees.

or just do a progression thread.
After lurking the site for 3 years, and finally getting involved first hand with my own prog threads, this is the best route IMO, other than trying to take advantage of specific organizational features and planning notes in a spread sheet to track all of your trees.

There's a degree of accountability that comes with posting your trees that motivates you to do a better job because other bonsai nuts are watching your progress!

I think I'll start posting progression threads sometime next year, once I have a good bit of "meat" for an initial post. I haven't had any of my trees even a year yet though, so for now I'm keeping my journals going.

I think I go a lot more in depth and reflective in my own tree journaling than I would in a progression thread.

@Orion_metalhead is about as methodical and thoughtful as I’ve seen with documenting his trees. Pretty sure he uses a spread sheet, but not sure if it’s available or even custom for that matter.

Thanks!! My project management / data analysis / organizational nitpickiness is what has lended me to want to carefully document.

I use google sheets but you could use excel also. I pre-build a template which I copy for each new tree. I can share my google sheet with anyone interested. I update the entry for each tree throughout the year, when I do major work on them, and end of year. End of year, each tree is measured and photographed. Had some issues with photos dropping out so I also update progression threads here for many trees.

My main items which I note in my records:

1. Age (true and trained)
2. Species (taxonomic and common name)
3. Where I got the tree
4. General health through the year
5. Major work and dates of work such as hard pruning, fertilizing, repots, wiring on and off
6. End of year measurements of trunk thickness and height
7. Photos
8. When the tree flushed out, candles extend, etc.

Its all color coded with a key for abbreviations

Because google sheets is cloud based, I can update from my mobile device easily. Once again, anyone interested in viewing, PM me for sharing options. I can give view capability with a link. I have more than 100 trees listed.

If I were reaaaaally serious, Id pay for an app like CompanyCam or the many similar which can be used to document each tree in photos with note options, reminders, tasks, etc.

We use this for large projects where we need documentation of work by our field technicians. Works like a charm. I think there are some free options too so if you have only, say, 10 trees, you could possibly get away with a free membership. The paid gives you options for things like videos and such, gallery sharing, etc.

you inspired me to spreadsheet my trees. My collection is expanding and I want to be able to schedule my tasks better.

I have a to do list on paper but it's not the same as having everything on screen with pictures of each tree, the last time I did work to it/fertilized, etc

It takes a little getting used to, but if youre at the point where you know you will be invested in the hobby / artform it can be a real blessing.

Like I said earlier, I can help if you want some pointers on the formatting, process, etc.

I would also appreciate if you can make your template available for inspiration :)
