I bough this azalea in 2022 from a nursery and i have been gradually reducing it every year, as it was about 3 times larger than this. This year i repotted it finally...i think i put it off as i now know what kind of a mess was awaiting me with the roots. I took about 50 to 60% of the roots, but they took a bit of a beating. I cannot remember the variety anymore, but nothing extraordinary. Regardless if it survives, i post updates here.

In my experience you can go pretty hard on azaleas and they dont mind too much. I’ve chopped off all the branches and roots at the same time and been fine more than once.

The trunk chops i notice it takes in its stride, no worries, but this was my first root work, so always stressful if you don't know how much root you can take and how it will react (it is a fairly unnatural operation for plants after all). Out of interest, what kind of aftercare did you provide the tree when doing this?

None. At the time I didnt have a shade structure, but now I do and I keep azaleas in there full time.
