Kicking a thread off to document a fun little project I have going. I discovered a couple big ol Muscadine vines growing up into the trees on my property last year. Saved some seeds and germinated them and have a bunch of little plants going but also found this and pulled it this spring. Pretty sure I hacked it back a few times last year without a second thought and since I’m probably going to have to pare down substantially the amount I have since so many germinated I’m going to try to develop this into a cool little 4 or 5 trunked clump. I’m gonna set it up on a piece of removable fencing to continually vine out for growth and then chop back to the main trunks. Excited about it!

I feel like these are a 'spring bonsai', if there is such a thing. Like you can get the bonsai look in the spring and then summer fall, let it run on a fence, maybe up-potting every couple of years so its root can breathe. Old muscadine stumps are very full of character. I miss the one I had.

Muscadines can make for some very interesting trunk forms. I have a pair that have been growing together for about 5 years now. I have to keep on topping the spring growth and keep it cut back before it latches on to everything. I have noticed that I start getting tighter internodes on it the longer I leave it alone in the same pot.

I am running with just the strategy you described to quicken trunk growth to some degree. Left space around where I will prune back to over the winter but going to let the vines run.
