This is the time of year to start pawing through the discard pile at local nurseries.

This J. chinensis had been knocked out of its pot. It was tossed back in and some dirt hastily thrown in on it, then put in the back of the lot where I found it.

I added some bonsai soil, anchored it firmly in the pot and cleared out a branch or two and will let it overwinter in a fairly protected spot.

I expect it will be about 1/3 this large or less when I get through with it. First pic (larger tree) is untrimmed. Second is with preliminary trim to see trunk. Shears are for scale.

They are always interesting finds. Christmas in the early fall. What (style) do you see in this plants life?

Undoubtedly a small informal upright. But then, I've only had it a few hours now. It will take more study and I'm quite likely to change my mind a dozen times until I do the first work on it in May or June.

Nice score! I went hunting at several garden centers today. Junipers with lots of tiny trunks, crummy Hinoki cypress, and everything else overpriced with no discounts. I saw one plant with potential, a Japanese white pine in a 3 gallon container. Probably could have made a nice shohin with some work, but they wanted $150 for it!

Nice trunk on this one. These end of season sales are great. However, with all the health issue many trees are having, I am very cautious before bringing a new tree in. New trees are usually quarantined for awhile and inspected before they are put any where near my collection.
