Hello! This is my first post

I have a few different elms. Id like to take cuttings from them and was curious to see what everyone else's methods are? Im pretty sure the best time to take them is in the summer but was wondering if anyone has tried hardwood cuttings in winter.

- 2 seju elm
- 2 Hokkaido elms
-a bunch of ulmus alata - winged elms.

Thanks.

I've had about 99% success with regular lacebark elm. Just cutting off a whip from current year's growth and plugging it into some pearlite and spag moss. Just keep them humid with some sort of dome and the take almost instantly. Super easy now I just need to get my hands on some seju and do the same.

Thanks for the tip, is that when they are actively growing or when they are dormant? I've tried all the elms I mentioned earlier this year and i had one alata root and the rest had calloused But the seju elm cuttings didn't even callous.

For small cuttings, late spring is usually the right time.

I tried it on a cork-bark elm in mid-June. I put the cuttings in a mix high in sand. By the end of August, I separated the cuttings.

Maybe for bigger cuttings before budbreak, under a cold frame... ???

separated

I'm a little disappointed to not see those cuttings barerooted and root worked.

I'm on the...NEVER MISS AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK THE ROOTS....bus.

Welcome to Crazy Alex!

I put some elm cuttings in my indoor catchall after pruning this fall....
They still seem viable but are doing nothing.

I think some folks refrigerate them till spring.

I would just try a bunch of ways...
You never know.
