Hi all, I'd love some feedback on my first wiring job
Bought this Dwark Hinoki 'Little Jamie' on Oct 16th from Meehan's Miniatures. My eventual goal is a formal upright upright, somewhere between this Hinoki and a classic redwood shape.
Steps:
- Transplanted from nursery containers into a mixture of potting soil, perlite, and horticultural charcoal (probably close to a 60%-40%-40% ratio). I did very minimal root work besides cutting off any encircled roots at the bottom of the pots. Since it's a bad time to repot, I left it in the original soil and I'll keep it this way until spring
- Cut back the extra long branches at the bottom of the tree
- Cleaned out dead material from the interior. There are several lower branches that have living tips, but are mostly dead. I kept those because I know Chamaecyparis won't back bud on old growth.
- Attempted to wire most of the branches. I wasn't clear if I should be wiring all of the green/un-lignified tips and leaf fronds
- I trimmed only the leading tips of the longer branches to encourage more ramification
