Hey Bonsai Nuts,

Hoping for some assistance from those who know more than I. Some of my maples have over the last growing season developed small white bumps on the trunks which worry me (pictures 3-8).

At first, because it was only on one of the trunks of the multi trunk tree (picture 4), which happened to be the trunk that had a huge 16 inch+ shoot off the top that I let grow out over the season, I chocked it up to being tied to strong growth - I was thinking that it lead to bark similar to the tree in the first two photos (that maple only seems to send out a pair of leaves or 2 and then flowers so minimal extension growth under my care and has had that bumpy bark all along but no new white spots to my recollection, and only a few now).

But I'm unsure, and assume it is cause for concern. It still is mostly on the one trunk. The multi trunk tree didn't seem to be in poor health (leaves seemed healthy and dropped "normally") but I've never done more then water and fert, and this is only its 2nd growing season in my care. The branches look like they are having a rough time to me (picture 6), "dusty" looking is the best word I can think of, but it doesn't wipe off and the threads I've seen about powdery mildew seems to be mostly on leaves. Could be a separate issue.

The white dots/bugs/fungus is also on the trunk of a small maple I've had for 3 seasons (picture 3) but the branches of it look normal, and again no bad signs during the growing season other then the development of the dots later on after the first tree. I can't remember if it had any in past seasons, I don't think so, but growth was slower (didn't fert first season, kept it really light 2nd, bit more this season)

Scratching the white off lead to a streak of brown that then turned Grey over some time (picture 8). I'm near Seattle if that helps.

Any thoughts appreciated. Also, hi sorce.

Looks to me like lenticells. Breathing openings in the bark. Part of how [some] maples grow
