Discount slash pine

Got this today and thought I would give it a try. It's in a small nursery pot with very little soil. Can I get it in a training pot today with some bonsai soil? Pot might be too large...

Or maybe i can use the same pot, just replace the soil?

Also has this white residue on the needles close to the branches
