Differences between wild and domestic growth habit in Ulmus campestris

Look at these English elms (ulmus minor aka ulmus campestris, aka Olmo negrillo) growing freely in Spain

They have a very hard life, living in the limit of the distribution area, ones years, badly, and other worse, harassed by the wind, hot summers with almost no rain, and graphiosis

They are attacked by rabbits too.

But the are strong, and always are young trees fighting for its life

does that really matter to you? , well, if you want to know, they are snow boots, warm and comfortable to walk ourdoors in winter, european size 44, for the scale

Today I have walked again between the elms, this time the trees are filled with leaves, healthy and green by now, nevertheles there are some pest and some diseases, but is the circle of life. By the way, for the fashion victims, in the video I wear sports shoes hahaha

This "sapling" planted in the ground at full sun three years ago



It's developing a really corky bark!

I think that the more sun, the more cork growth!

FWIW, this kind of corky growth is very common on American elm species, including Cedar elm (ulmus crassifolia) and winged elm (ulmus alata). The cork "wings" form on new, fast growing branching, which doesn't have to be exposed to strong sun. The cork becomes the furrowed bark as the tree matures, or sometimes drops off.

Yes, the fast growing is part of the equation, but there must be more factors...I have some minor that have grown quite well, and don't have any cork at all in that branches

Other have cork wings even in tinny branches




And someone that have cork int the new growth, and smooth bark in "old" trunk








Cork is a protective tissue, therefore I think that the more exposed a tree is, the more energy it will use to create this protective tissue in order to avoid external attacks (sun, wind, drought, whatever...), but if it does not need it, it will use the energy in another type of growth (elongate branches and more photosynthetic leaves).

Anyway, I do love elms, they are quite fascinating!!

I think I already mentioned in an old thread the elms I saw in the Pyreneans, just fter the border, in Catalunya.They had this kind of cork bark. I think it's because of the climate (very hot and sunny in summer). I suppose they can pass genetic variability to seedlings.
