"Designer" red maple

Awesome nebari for a red maple (Acer rubrum). I guess I should start keeping an eye out at the local nurseries and tree farms to see if I can find a decent nebari ready for a trunk chop.

Nice start on nebari, but I'd bury that nebari and cut it back when you get some smaller roots close to the trunk. What do you think?

It was home depot that I got this one from and I don't really look there so much anymore - I usually just park in front of the garden center and enter the store from there. Sometimes something will catch my eye - and this did.

Yeah I thought about that but I like big O' gangly roots. Plus I have 15 or so red maple seeding I'm going to be using as grafts. I'll be thread grafting more ganglyness to these roots.

Nice tree gigs! Good base but I may be chopping that bad boy in half.

For some reason I like taller trunks and I may or may not still do that but for now I like it where it is.

Wow, nice colour!

I too, would bury the roots "neck deep" for a couple years with something that will remain moist most of the time.

Grew so much it pushing itself out of the pot1120161018b_HDR.jpg 1120161016_HDR.jpg

This spring I think it's either going in the ground, or a very large Anderson flat. I'm most likely going to chop it right here and grow a new tree. 1120161018_HDR.jpg

It'll give a greater taper and dynamic once it grows a new leader.Plus I'll be burrying the roots as well. Got to be ugly before it can be a work of art.

Nice tree Giga! My mom would figuratively literally kill to have leaves that colour in her flower press!
Will you be doing some sort of splitting/layering on that sausage root or will that one be solved by burying it deeper?

I haven't decided about that root. Your eye is drawn to it, but in nature things sometimes are gangly and I like gangly. We shall see what I do the time of repot happens

Lovely red maple with an amazing nebari! You found a winner in terms of fall color as well. I keep looking for a potted October Glory for the reliable red color in Acer rubrum, but all online are super expensive(like 60-$120 for 3-4 foot saplings) and I have found almost none at the big box stores. Should have picked up that $20 five footer at Lowes in Valdosta on the way up here!

I have found a few tiny seedlings locally(SE PA) that turned deep bright red including the stem, but I do not know if this characteristic will stick around when the seedlings mature more.

Yeah I got this at lowes or homedepot and the root spread is what caught my eye- plus I LOVE local species so I have great plans for this one.
