I need help with this Shimpaku. Stats: 4"+ trunk, heights 30".

I am thinking pulling the apex lower, plus trimming and wiring of course. But designing and creating from this material at this stage to make it more appealing, I need suggestions. I do really want to bend this thick trunk, I know it is not easy to be done for the beginner. And down the line there will be some carvings. Thanks!Juniper.jpg

I'd be curious to tilt this thing almost 90 degrees clockwise then twist it a bit. Maybe play with the angles and see if you can't make this into a truly unique piece. Sweet bark.

if it is placed more upright maybe a nice literati in there with some cool deadwood features?

One more comment? K, sure. It seems as though this "shimp" has been sheared and for that is reverting to juvenile foliage. Might check out "pinching vs shearing junipers" and enjoy the anger and knowledge that are swapped right here on this forum. Just some food for thought.

Cheers,
B

For now the bark stay as is. Yes previous owner did thin foliage, because it has juvi. needles coming out. Only thing I would love to correct is the trunk, it too much out 1 sided.

Hi The1only,
If you can also take pictures in other sides, it will help people to assist you. Right now, I see it has a lot of way to go. The one which I like most is cascade style for this tree! It has a nice movement of trunk line at least in the lower half!
Yes, you need to remove the redundant branchlets on the top to view it better. You should place the pot on the rotary table with few wood blocks to help you change the pot position to see which way will give you a nice trunk movement. Yes, the trunk movement is very important in design.
I agree with you that to bend the 4"+ trunk of juniper is really hard or impossible for the beginner!
Good luck!

I'm with that.

Probly getting rid of everything but one of those top heads.

If like to see up into that crown....

Is it useful to create everything from?

I could see bringing the trunk a little tighter....but I like it....

@bonhe I will try to take more pictures from different angels, weather is not permitting at the moment. Regarding cascading, bending the trunk lower or re pottingat the slanting angel?
@sorce bring in the trunk a little tighter that was my thought, the problem is I might kill it lol.

Repotting.

I think an angle change could be safer and just as effective.

I'd use that head but bring it over to hide the straight section of trunk....
And outline it with the back branch as jin.aviary-image-1485018713039.jpeg

And stub out the little branches...

Save the lowest...as years down...
That could be cut back to with wicked effect.

If you can get that head to swing down clockwise...basically turning it upside down, your now stronger apex branches would be at the bottom....

Creating an almost perfect situation to start building branches.

But the more I look at that low branch....
The more I want to just future that up!
